We enjoyed living on a sailboat in the Caribbean for 8 years. A common question we get is about safety and piracy. The short answer is we did not have a problem, not even an incident, in those 8 years. Why? I don't think we were lucky, we just used common sense. By cruising in the Caribbean, I am referring to the Windward's and Leeward's, Trinidad and Venezuela. That is where we cruised. We went no father west than Puerto La Cruz ,Venezuela. Why? The prevailing winds are from east to west on that part of the globe. Any time you venture west you face a tough beat going back east. Piracy...if you were a druggie and wanted a boat to smuggle drugs would you want a sailboat that goes 5 knots or a go fast...

Living Aboard a Sailboat - Do Not Wait Too Long

We lived aboard our sailboat in the Caribbean for 8 years. I was 49 to 57, my bride 42 to 50. Could we do it again right now, ages 64 and 57...sure, but with the following caveats. These will not be a surprise: 1) You are less physically able to do things as you age. Not an earthshaking statement but if you are say 45 now and want to go cruising. Do it now. If you are waiting to accumulate more money to buy a special boat... you are most certainly making a mistake. The docks in the US are full of folks saying... one day I am heading to the Caribbean and go cruising. They never leave the dock. 2) The reason the above is a mistake if you really want to go cruising, is that there will always be...

can offer one of the most liberating experiences in the world. However, there are not many people that know how to sail properly and this is why the Internet can be so useful. For them, there are specialized companies providing yachts for rent and training programs, all at low-cost prices. Fractional Sailing Program has offered interested customers the possibility to cruise with a luxurious yacht, paying only a part of the possession. Many clients have proved out to be interested, considering such programs as innovative and attractive. It represents a great alternative to owning a boat, especially as a lot of people still dream of owning one. Sailing with a beautiful yacht can transform from a dream...

That doesn't matter. Fractional sailing can still be the answer for you. For a fraction of the cost of actually owning a sailboat, you can have almost all the benefits of sole ownership. But here are seven benefits owners don't have. 1. Competitive Price - If you were to buy a new Catalina 350, the upfront expense would be around $34,500. By comparison, you can get a fractional sailing membership on the same boat for only $3,500. 2. Training - If you've never been trained to handle a sailboat, all the training you could need is available for no extra cost once you are a member of a fractional sailing team. This is a great benefit that other programs (even sailing clubs) simply don't offer. 3. Seven...

Need to build team spirit? What better way to boost your company's morale than through giving them opportunity to bond and have fun while interacting with one another? Instead of your usual company outing, why not try corporate sailing instead? Let's face it. Work can be stressful at times. And with deadlines looming, projects hanging and assignments stacking, emotions can run high. Notice how your employees are always at each other's throats? Perhaps, it's time for some company bonding - without the work. Why choose corporate sailing? Sailing is a sport that promotes team work. To maneuver a sail boat properly, everyone on board must do his or her part to steer the vessel. Even though the sailor is...

Sailing for beginners the first time can be exciting and a little foreboding at the same time. If you are a first, time sailor and do not know about the sailboat you should familiarizes your self and study up on the subject. You do not want to get into trouble and not know how to handle the situation. The first thing you should do is, read up on sailing and emergency situations and solutions. Read up on the different parts of your sailboat; and how every thing works. Also, make sure to get a repair manual and keep it handy. Next you will want to get the sailboat if you plan to just go day sailing then a small craft will suffice. However if you plan to go on a trip then you will need a much larger...

Living on a sailboat in the Caribbean was something we enjoyed for 8 years. We found that the choice of a proper anchor was crucial to a good night's sleep. Our main anchor was a 35 lb CQR with 200 feet all chain rode. We called her "Sominex". The bottom in the Windward's and Leeward's was mostly sand. A few places, Simpson Bay Lagoon in St Marten, had some mud but that was the exception. Our second anchor was a 15 lb Delta; 15 feet of chain, 200 feet of rope rode. We did not use that much. My recommendation would be as big a CQR as you can stand with all chain rode. We had an electric windlass (Lewmar) that made retrieving the hook no sweat ... Do not cut corners and go with a rope rode due to no...

living on a sailboat

Living on a sailboat in the Caribbean was a way of life for 8 years. Sailing from Trinidad and Venezuela in the south to the Virgin Islands in the north. We had a ball and lived very well. One common question was where did you eat? Simple answer was 90% of the time we ate on the boat. Hard to believe that a small galley on a 35 foot boat could put out such great food but it did. We had turkey on Thanksgiving and bread made from scratch at any anchorage we chose. Now we modified the 90% rule when we docked at Puerto La Cruz in Venezuela or in Trinidad. The restaurant food was so cheap we ate out practically every day for lunch. By cheap I'm talking 2 full meals, some beer and tip for less than $10...

Living on a sailboat is a very cheap way to live. We did so for 8 years in the Caribbean. We stayed in the Windward's and Leeward's, going no further east than Puerto La Cruz, Venezuela. Once the boat, Shadowtime, a 35-foot Island Packet, was in the Virgin Islands she never left the warm Caribbean, until we sold her 8 years later. What do I mean by cheap living? Sailboat cruisers are the tightest people on the planet. The answer to why they are so cheap is they will do anything, legal of course, to avoid going back to work. Here are some specifics: 1) Use public transportation...no boat has a car onboard so to get around the islands you take the bus, some regular size; more common is the 14...

living on a sailboat

The idea of living on a sailboat may appeal to you at first glance. But then you think...What would I do all day? We lived on a sailboat for 8 years in the Caribbean and I can assure you that boredom is not a problem. Here is your typical day. Let's put you in English Harbor in Antigua...at anchor, the one time home of Lord Nelson, England's greatest admiral. He was living on a sailboat here in 1795. Upon arising you grab a paperback that you got 2 days ago at the cruiser book exchange...your cost, nada. You start the coffee, being careful not to wake the first mate. You go up top, drink your coffee and watch the harbor come to life. A mega yacht comes in and anchors...must be Oprah's, there is a...

We lived on our boat, a 35...

Living aboard a sailboat is a great way to enjoy retirement. It is not only a lot of fun it is a very frugal way of living. My wife and I retired in 1994, when I was 49. We lived on our boat for 8 years prior to swallowing the anchor in 2002. We bought our boat, May 1994, in the Clear Lake area south of Houston. I sailed the boat to the British Virgin Islands 6 months after purchase and that is where it stayed for the next 8 years. My comments are therefore directed at people who want to retire to living aboard a sailboat in the Caribbean. It was 8 years of fun in the sun, and it was sure cheap, less than $1,000 a month. Why so cheap? Good question. I think it is because cruising sailors as a group...

If you have ever dreamed of purchasing a yacht and sailing off into the crystal blue ocean, your dreams may not be that far out of reach. This article will discuss five good reasons why it might be a convenient time to pursue your dream of buying a yacht. 1. Summer is Coming-- Anyone knows that the best time to be out on the ocean is during the summer. The weather is perfect, the water is a deep blue, and the sun stays out late into the evening. 2. Prices are Great-- With the recent downturn of the economy, came better prices on many items. Yachts are not excluded in this assumption. Many yachts are going for thousands and even hundreds of thousands less than what they were purchased for. 3. It Has...

Living cheap was a bonus when we started living aboard a sailboat in 1994. For 8 years we cruised from Venezuela, Trinidad to the Virgin Islands. We had a ball, so can you. If the economy has got you singing the blues take heart living aboard a sailboat is not only as fun as you think it is...It is a great way of living cheaply. Once on the boat, 6 to 9 months a year, we spent about $1,000 a month. We wanted for nothing, we were safe, surrounded by fellow cruisers, and experienced the laid back lifestyle of the Caribbean. If you are expecting the other shoe to drop you will be disappointed...I can think of very few negatives to this way of living cheaply. When living aboard the negatives aren...

Stability and lightness, along with speed and power, are the characteristics the ?snappy? sailboat Catamaran is known for. This is thanks to its double hull making it lighter and thus, faster, adding to its advantage. The boat?s name finds its origin in an Indian language called Tamil, kattu meaning ?to tie? and maran meaning ?wood or tree? but its current shape is influenced much by the South Pacific. So it basically means tree or wood pieces tied up to form the shape of a boat with a double hull. It is of ancient lineage used by the Polynesians to settle in far distant islands. Englishmen at first remarked on the usage of the boat but it was accepted as a craft hundreds of years later and its...

One of the big allures of sailing is laying back in warm sunshine and enjoying a leisurely broad reach to a favorite anchor spot, or conversing in the cockpit with friends decked out in only swim suits and flip flops. But many people miss out on an exciting time of year to sail, winter time. My Wife and I originally made our decision to live aboard our 33' CSY sailboat when the economy started plummeting as a way for our small family of three to lower our costs of living and most importantly fulfill a dream and live a life outside the ordinary. Without a doubt this was the best decision we have made and do not regret leaving terra firma for a minute. The experience has made our relationship stronger and provided our young daughter a perspective few can understand. It is not an easy lifestyle. Every single task takes twice, if not three times as long, to accomplish than if you lived on land. Buying groceries, doing laundry, even refueling can take an entire day compared to living on land...

Everyone wants it and sees it as a good thing, but when it comes to pinpointing what exactly it means to them, most folks don't have a quick answer. Part of the problem is that while most everyone strives to achieve this emotional state, most people haven't really taken the time to think about what it means or how to get there. Another part of the problem is that even after someone figures out their personal definition of joy, that doesn't necessarily mean that their partner has the same definition. It might be the...

If you want to experience the freedom of sailing and moving gracefully through the water with nothing but wind power, than buying a used sailboat is your ticket to getting there. With so many sailors on the water - and owners growing out of smaller boats or down-sizing from bigger boats - there is currently a booming used sailboat market. The sailboat of your dreams may be on sale right now, just waiting for you to find her! Buying a used sailboat can be a safe, high value bet if you know what to look for. Search for sailboats that were kept for many years by the same owner. This means that even if the boat was not meticulously maintained - though many are - you still have access to the history of...

The thought of living cheaply means sacrifice and depriving yourself to most people. We have lived cheaply for so long it is second nature, but without sacrifice and we certainly do not feel deprived. Our friends do not think of us as hippies, stingy, or Spartan. They also know we will not waste money either. We have been retired for 14 years, since I was 49, by living cheaply and well. We have experienced living aboard a sailboat in the Caribbean, living in an RV and living overseas. All are much cheaper ways to live compared to a house and "traditional living". After all, what is considered "traditional" anymore after the erosion of assets in the last two years? If these times of uncertainty have...

We are currently living in our motor home, but the plan is that when I retire from my permanent job next year that we are going to move full time onto the sailboat, and start cruising around the world. At that point our primary RV will become our secondary RV, since it will provide us with a home when we fly back to visit with friends and relatives, or to handle our business affairs. As I am...

When you plan to undertake a voyage on the seas, there are various things which are needed to navigate through the seas.
